Our activities started in January 2005 thanks to a project funded by the PIN-MATRA program of the Dutch government. ALERTIS - Fund for Bear and Nature Conservation is responsible for the overall project coordination. The leading Bulgarian partner organisation is BALKANI Wildlife Society.

The main project goal is to improve the scientific knowledge about Brown bear populations in the country by using new and reliable methods for research and to set a base for the National Brown Bear Management Plan.

In July 2005 an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Environment and Waters and BALKANI Wildlife Society for final development of the National Brown Bear Management Plan.

In June 2006 started the second project funded by BBI-MATRA fund of the Dutch government. The Main goal is finalising the National Brown Bear Management Plan.
